Bignami (FdI): “The stop to the third mandate is also valid in Trentino and Friuli Venezia Giulia”

Bignami (FdI): “The stop to the third mandate is also valid in Trentino and Friuli Venezia Giulia”

"We have made a choice. I think Zaia is a person of great quality and value, but there is a ruling that must be respected. In the proposed law on the premiership we introduced the limit of two terms and the Constitutional Court has stated that it is a fundamental principle. If Zaia wanted to come to Emilia Romagna, all he has to do is cross the Po, so he can bring us some good government...". This was stated in an interview with the Gazzettino by the group leader of Fratelli d'Italia in the Chamber, Galeazzo Bignami , in which he reiterated the position of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's party, also recalling the recent ruling by the Constitutional Court. These words come on the eve of the Council of Ministers, which could decide to challenge the law of Trentino-Alto Adige that allows the third candidacy of Maurizio Fugatti . While the president of Veneto Luca Zaia reiterated his bitterness for the stop to the fourth term.

"I believe that the limit should be applied in all Regions. Except for specific connotations of special statute, which I don't think there are, I think that the challenge is the logical consequence", says Bignami then, commenting on the rule of the autonomous province of Trento for the third mandate. Here, a month ago, the green light for the Fugatti ter arrived : two Melonian councilors voted in favor of the popular president of the autonomous province, Maurizio Fugatti . The result? To get the change approved, the center-right split and the Melonians had to disobey the party directives and left FdI. Raising tension in the center-right.

The League does not want to give up "its" regions but for Veneto the chances of re-nominating Luca Zaia are now practically zero, thanks to the ruling of the Consulta on Vincenzo De Luca's Campania. The Campania governor tried to circumvent the ban. But the attempt was blocked by the Consulta which accepted the government's appeal and rejected the fragile rule that the Democratic president had put together - with the Campania law 16/2024 of last November - to be able to re-nominate in the next regional elections. In Friuli Venezia Giulia, the president of the Region, Massimiliano Fedriga, is still hoping as he has said several times: for the regions with special statutes the limit of mandates does not apply, because there is the possibility of self-determination. And the issue was also at the center of a heated debate in one of the last Councils of Ministers .

"We are aware of it", Bignami replies on the challenge that would have as a consequence "a brake on Massimiliano Fedriga 's hat trick in Friuli Venezia Giulia". "The important thing is to find who does well. Brothers of Italy in Veneto has 35%, so it is legitimate to listen to those who have such a broad consensus and make them participate in the choice, Veneto has a vocation for strong autonomy. There will be an equal dialogue between the political forces starting from the territory", he underlines in response to a question on the candidate for the next regional elections in Veneto.
